Job Summary
The Geotechnical Engineer is responsible for ensuring the structural stability of open-pit mining operations at the Kurmuk project site. The role collects and analyzes soil and rock data, performs slope stability modeling, implements ground control measures, maintains the Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP), and collaborates with engineering and geological teams to mitigate geotechnical risks.
Key Responsibilities
Mine Design & Planning:
Provide expert geotechnical input for open-pit designs, mine plans, and the evaluation of new engineering layouts.
Data Collection & Analysis:
Gather and interpret geological and geotechnical data, including rock fall logs, ground control issues, and laboratory testing results.
Risk Management & Slope Stability:
Identify and monitor geotechnical hazards, evaluate slope performance, and develop proactive mitigation measures.
Ground Control:
Develop, maintain, and enforce the site''s Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP) in compliance with safety standards and legislation.
Instrumentation & Water Management:
Oversee the installation, maintenance, and monitoring of geotechnical instruments (such as piezometers) and advise on dewatering and drainage systems.
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
Partner closely with mining engineers, geologists, and survey teams to ensure safe, efficient, and optimized operations.
Reporting & Compliance:
Compile comprehensive geotechnical reports, communicate risks to management, and adhere strictly to company safety, safeguarding, and gender equality policies.
Educational Qualification & Experience Requirements
Educational Background:
Tertiary qualification or diploma in Geotechnical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field
(Association with internationally recognized professional societies is an advantage)

Work Experience
Proven professional background in geotechnical assessments, slope stability analysis, and open-pit mining operations.
Required Skills & Competencies
Proficiency in geotechnical software packages for numerical modeling and analysis.
Strong understanding of rock mechanics, soil mechanics, rock mass properties, blasting principles, and geological modeling.
Familiarity with QA/QC protocols, risk assessment processes, and ground control management.
Excellent interpersonal, coaching, active listening, and communication abilities.
