Job Purpose
The Safety Officer will support the Head of HSE in promoting, enforcing, and maintaining a proactive zero-harm safety culture across site operations. The role is strictly focused on Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), including field risk assessments, haulage and heavy equipment traffic safety, incident prevention, worker health monitoring, and regulatory safety compliance. Note: Environmental compliance and management functions are outside the scope of this role.
Scope of Work & Key Responsibilities
Daily Field Supervision & Inspections:
Conduct regular daily safety walk-throughs across mining pits, processing plants, haul roads, workshops, and dumps. Identify and address unsafe acts and conditions immediately.
Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment (HIRA):
Assist operational teams in performing Job Safety Analyses (JSA) and risk assessments for routine and non-routine high-risk tasks (e.g., machinery maintenance, working at heights, heavy haulage).
Toolbox Talks & Safety Inductions:
Prepare and deliver daily/weekly pre-shift safety toolbox talks and conduct OHS orientation/inductions for new employees, contractors, and site visitors.
Traffic & Haulage Safety Enforcement:
Enforce the Traffic Management Plan (TMP), including blind spot awareness, 50m heavy equipment exclusion zones, speed limits, and proper spotter positioning.
Incident Reporting & Initial Investigation:
Respond promptly to workplace accidents, near-misses, and first-aid cases. Conduct initial root-cause investigations, log reports, and track corrective action closures under the direction of the Head of HSE.
Occupational Health & Hygiene Monitoring:
Ensure strict adherence to occupational health protocols, including heat stress management, fatigue monitoring, noise exposure controls, and proper usage of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Lockout / Tagout (LOTO) & Safe Work Permits:
Inspect and verify LOTO compliance during mechanical/electrical maintenance and audit the issuance of high-risk work permits.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
Proactive Field Inspections:
Conduct and document daily OHS workplace inspections across assigned operational sectors.
Hazard Resolution:
Track identified unsafe acts/conditions and ensure timely closure of corrective actions.
Safety Training & Engagement:
Lead pre-shift toolbox talks and complete OHS inductions for all assigned
Incident Reporting & Closure:
Report near-misses/incidents immediately and complete initial investigation reports within 24 hours.
Safe Work & LOTO Audits:
Perform weekly compliance audits on Lockout/Tagout procedures and high-risk work permits.
Qualifications & Experience Requirements
Education & Professional Certification
B.Sc/HND/OND in Occupational Health & Safety, Engineering, Earth Sciences, or related field. Professional OHS certification (e.g., NEBOSH IGC, IOSH, or ISPON) is mandatory.
Work Experience
Minimum of 3–5 years of direct experience as a Safety Officer in open-pit mining, heavy civil construction, quarrying, or heavy industrial operations.
Technical Knowledge:
Strong knowledge of mine safety regulations, hazard identification, heavy machinery/haulage safety, LOTO protocols, and emergency response procedures.
Core Skills:
Excellent hazard reporting, communication, leadership, hazard communication skills, and proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
