Job Summary

The Project/Site Surveyor is responsible for providing accurate surveying and setting-out services for the Company’s construction projects. The role involves establishing survey control points, setting out building and civil works, monitoring elevations, coordinates and alignment, interpreting construction drawings, taking field measurements and providing accurate survey data to guide construction activities.

The Surveyor works closely with the Project Manager, Site Engineers, Architects, Quantity Surveyors, contractors and other project personnel to ensure that construction works are executed in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, dimensions and levels.

Key Responsibilities

Establishment of Survey Control:

Establish and maintain site survey control points, benchmarks and reference grids.

Verify existing coordinates and benchmarks before commencement of works.

Ensure all project survey activities are referenced to approved control points.

Maintain accurate records of established control points.

Site Setting-Out:

Set out building foundations, columns, walls, roads, drainage and other construction elements.

Establish grid lines and building positions from approved drawings.

Set out structural and architectural elements accurately on site.

Confirm all setting-out works before construction proceeds.

Levels and Elevations:

Establish and monitor site levels and elevations.

Check foundation levels, floor levels, structural levels and external works.

Monitor slopes and gradients for roads, drainage and other civil works.

Immediately report discrepancies in levels or elevations.

Interpretation of Drawings:

Review architectural, structural and civil engineering drawings.

Translate design information into accurate site setting-out requirements.

Identify discrepancies between drawings and actual site conditions.

Liaise with the relevant consultants where clarification is required.

Construction Monitoring:

Monitor the position, alignment, dimensions and elevation of ongoing construction works.

Conduct routine checks on structural elements during construction.

Verify that completed works correspond with approved drawings.

Report deviations and recommend corrective action.

Structural Setting-Out:

Set out columns, beams, walls, foundations and other structural elements.

Check verticality, alignment and positioning of structural components.

Monitor structural elements at different construction stages.

Provide survey confirmation before critical construction activities proceed.

External and Civil Works:

Set out roads, walkways, drainage systems, culverts and other external works.

Establish required gradients and levels for civil works.

Monitor alignment and elevations throughout execution.

Conduct as-built surveys upon completion.

Field Measurements and Data Collection:

Conduct accurate field measurements and collect survey data.

Record coordinates, distances, angles, levels and other relevant information.

Process field data and prepare required survey outputs.

Maintain accurate field books and digital records.

As-Built Surveys:

Conduct as-built surveys for completed construction works.

Record the actual location, dimensions and levels of completed works.

Prepare as-built drawings and survey information.

Ensure final survey records accurately reflect the completed project.

Survey Equipment Management:

Management

Operate total stations, GPS/GNSS equipment, automatic/digital levels and other surveying instruments.

Ensure survey equipment is properly maintained and protected.

Conduct routine equipment checks before use.

Report faults and calibration requirements promptly.

Quality Control:

Conduct independent survey checks on critical construction activities.

Verify accuracy before and during execution of major works.

Identify survey errors and construction deviations early.

Support the project team in maintaining required construction standards.

Coordination with Site Team:

Work closely with Site Engineers, Project Managers, Architects, Quantity Surveyors and contractors.

Attend site coordination meetings where survey input is required.

Provide survey information required for construction planning.

Coordinate setting-out activities with the construction programme.

Quantity and Measurement Support:

Provide accurate measurements required by the Quantity Surveyor and project team.

Assist in verifying dimensions and quantities of completed works where required.

Support measurement of earthworks, excavation, filling and other relevant activities.

Provide survey data required for project valuation and reporting.

Earthworks and Excavation:

Carry out setting-out and level checks for excavation works.

Monitor excavation depths and formation levels.

Establish cut-and-fill levels where applicable.

Provide accurate survey information for earthwork activities.

Survey Reports and Documentation:

Prepare daily, weekly and project survey reports as required.

Maintain field notes, survey records, drawings and measurement data.

Document all survey checks and identified deviations.

Submit reports promptly to the  Project  Manager.

Site Inspection and Verification:

Conduct routine site inspections to verify  construction positioning and levels.

Inspect completed works before subsequent construction activities commence.

Confirm critical dimensions and coordinates.

Escalate unresolved technical issues to the Project Manager.

Contractor and Subcontractor Coordination:

Provide setting-out information to contractors and subcontractors.

Monitor survey-related activities carried out by contractors.

Verify contractor survey work where necessary.

Ensure external survey activities are coordinated with the Company’s project requirements.

Safety and Site Compliance:

Comply with the Company''s health and safety procedures.

Use appropriate PPE when working on construction sites.

Maintain safe working practices when conducting field surveys.

Report unsafe conditions observed during surveying activities.

Supervision of Junior Survey Staff:

Supervise Junior Surveyors, Survey Technicians and Survey Assistants.

Allocate field assignments and review completed work.

Train junior staff on proper survey procedures and equipment use.

Ensure survey activities are completed accurately and on schedule.

General Project Support:

Participate in project planning and technical meetings when required.

Provide technical survey advice to the project team.

Support special surveys and investigations assigned by management.

Perform other duties related to surveying and construction activities as assigned.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education

BSc/HND in Surveying, Surveying & Geoinformatics, Geomatics or a related discipline.

Professional registration with the Surveyors Council of Nigeria (SURCON) is an advantage and required where the position involves professional surveying practice. SURCON identifies registered persons as Surveyors and regulates the practice of surveying in Nigeria.

Experience

5–8 years relevant experience in construction surveying.

Proven experience working on building and/or civil construction projects.

Strong experience in setting-out, levelling, coordinates and construction monitoring.

Experience with Total Station, GPS/GNSS and Auto Level.

Experience working with architectural, structural and civil engineering drawings.

Experience on major construction projects is an advantage.
