Job Summary

Oxfam is seeking a detail-oriented Finance Assistant to join our team in Gambella, Ethiopia. In this maternity cover role, you will play a crucial part in maintaining daily financial transactions, mitigating financial risks, and ensuring smooth financial operations across our regional program activities and intervention areas.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Operations & Transactions:

Settle travel and program floats/advances, maintain the field office float register, and manage petty cash funds and regular disbursements.

Payment Processing & Verification:

Cross-check verification documents to effect payments across intervention areas, prepare Payment Invoices (PI) for logistics requests, and ensure proper tax deductions (income tax, withholding tax, and casual labor payrolls).

Record Keeping & Auditing:

Record daily payments in cash and bank books, apply paid stamps to invoices, organize sequential filing systems, and assist with internal and external audit schedules.

Compliance & Reporting:

Prepare monthly summaries for statutory obligations, file monthly tax and pension returns with government authorities, and ensure strict adherence to Oxfam financial policies and local regulations.

Cross-Departmental Collaboration:

Support program and logistics teams on financial matters, conduct regular cash counts with Senior Finance Officers, and ensure proper budget line allocation for expenditures.

Required Qualifications

Education

Bachelor’s degree (BA) in Accounting, Finance, or a related field from a recognized university.

Experience

2 to 4 years of relevant finance experience, ideally within an international non-governmental organization (INGO).

Technical Skills:

Strong proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word) and familiarity with financial management software.

Soft Skills:

Exceptional attention to detail, high integrity, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to work effectively in a culturally diverse team environment.

Languages:

Good command of spoken and written English; knowledge of local languages is a strong advantage.

Required Skills and Competencies

Familiarity with working in a refugee context.

Willingness to travel to Oxfam field operation areas as required.

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
