Swim Coach / Life Guard at Lagos Preparatory School and Secondary

A reputable International School committed to academic excellence, safeguarding, and promoting the welfare of young people seeks to engage a

qualified and experienced Swim Coach/Lifeguard

to support its swimming programme and ensure the safety and wellbeing of students during swimming activities.

Key Responsibilities

Deliver high-quality swimming lessons and coaching sessions to students across different age groups and ability levels.

Plan and deliver engaging, structured swimming sessions that develop students’ swimming ability, water confidence, technique, fitness, and overall physical wellbeing.

Assess students’ swimming abilities and monitor their progress, providing appropriate feedback and support for improvement.

Maintain accurate records of students’ attendance, swimming levels, progress, and relevant assessments.

Ensure the safe and effective use of the swimming pool and all swimming equipment during lessons and activities.

Act as a lifeguard during swimming lessons, training sessions, recreational activities, and other pool-related events, maintaining constant vigilance and responding appropriately to emergencies.

Enforce pool safety rules and ensure that students follow established safety procedures at all times.

Conduct appropriate pool and equipment safety checks before and during swimming activities and promptly report any hazards, defects, or concerns.

Respond quickly and appropriately to emergencies, including providing first aid and carrying out rescue procedures where required.

Ensure appropriate student-to-coach/lifeguard ratios are maintained during swimming activities.

Work collaboratively with teachers and relevant staff to ensure swimming activities support students’ wider physical development and wellbeing.

Support students with different swimming abilities and learning needs, adapting coaching approaches where necessary.

Promote a positive, inclusive, and encouraging environment that builds students’ confidence and enjoyment of swimming.

Ensure safeguarding procedures are followed at all times and actively contribute to the protection and welfare of children and young people.

Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and demonstrate a high standard of conduct when working with students.

Participate in swimming events, competitions, school activities, and other duties related to the swimming programme as required.

Qualifications & Experience

Bachelor’s degree or relevant qualification in Physical Education, Sports Science, Sports Coaching, or a related field would be an advantage.

Recognised swimming coaching qualification/certification.

Current and recognised lifeguard certification.

Current First Aid, CPR and/or AED certification.

Minimum of

3–5 years’ experience

as a swimming coach and/or lifeguard, preferably within a structured school or educational environment.

Experience coaching children and young people across different age groups and ability levels.

Good understanding of swimming techniques, water safety, rescue procedures, and pool safety standards.

Experience in developing and delivering structured swimming programmes.

Strong child protection and safeguarding awareness.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to motivate, encourage, and build confidence in students.

Strong observation, risk assessment, and emergency response skills.

Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary school team.

A calm, responsible, and vigilant approach, particularly in emergency situations.

Previous experience working within an international or British curriculum school environment would be an advantage.
