The Pharo Foundation Education Programme is committed to raising students’ achievement and implementing learning experiences that contribute to the future skills needed for higher education. The curriculum and pedagogy are being used to promote the development of students’ 21st- Century skills. This is achieved through the consistent use of rigorous learning outcomes and the alignment of supporting pedagogy and assessment.
The Pharo Secondary School, Sheikh is a leading boarding school located in the Sahil Region, in the town of Sheikh between the port city of Berbera and Burcoa, Somaliland. The town of Sheikh has a pleasant cool climate all year round due to its high altitude. The school is renowned for its academic excellence and secure and caring environment in which students of all abilities can experience success and achieve their full potential within a broad and balanced curriculum. The school is currently following the Edexcel International Curriculum; London University-based IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education), and the Somaliland National Curriculum. The aim is to prepare students to become respectful contributing members of the communities in which they live. The school has many prominent politicians and other key officials among its graduates.
Headquartered in London, the Foundation has an operational Head Office in Nairobi, Kenya with country offices in Ethiopia (Addis Ababa and Assosa), Somaliland (Hargeisa) and Rwanda (Kigali) with further expansion plans in East Africa.

Position Summary
We are seeking a highly dependable history teacher to join our boarding school. The incumbent’s responsibilities include preparing lessons and curricula, teaching students to analyze different texts, providing academic support, and fostering good relationships. He/she should demonstrate a sound knowledge of history and be comfortable working with strict deadlines and also be open to feedback.
To be successful as a history teacher, you should be tolerant of different opinions and be able to create a learning environment where students respect each other. As a boarding school teaching life extends well beyond the time spent with students in a classroom. Tutorials, field trips, and ongoing engaging school and community-wide activities also form part of a teacher’s responsibilities.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Working in close collaboration with the Head Teacher, the teacher will be responsible for designing and providing lessons and learning opportunities that are engaging, show a depth of teacher subject competence and allow students to develop and demonstrate critical subject skills and knowledge.
Monitor and track each student’s development and provide the necessary support to ensure academic excellence and overall development.
Discuss prominent historical figures, dates, and events with students and ensure that they understand circumstances without the propaganda attached to them.
Create instructional resources on history lessons and ensure that students understand the motivation behind events.
Encourage students to look at multiple viewpoints and make their judgments about the motivations behind historical events.
Administer history tests and give out assignments and check both according to specific marking directives.
Assist students in comprehending the significance of social and political issues.
Design lesson presentations and encourage students to take an active part in discussions.
Manage student behaviour in the classroom and common areas by enforcing school rules and procedures.
Provide student counselling and support by working together with school leadership and other teachers.
Plan and prepare lesson plans, scheme of work, and instructional materials. Assign, correct, grade, and give feedback on classwork, homework, and tests.
Actively participate and deliver tutorials, co-curricular activities and other activities conducted in a boarding school environment and as stipulated by the Ministry of Education.
Supporting the recruitment process of new students for the Secondary School as appropriate.
Prepare and guide students in career development and post-secondary education.
Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the line manager.Qualification Requirements
BA or MA in History or a similar discipline.
At least 5 years of experience in teaching History or similar discipline.
Passion for the subject matter and teaching, with a commitment to student success.
Capable of developing and presenting appropriate, creative, and adaptable curriculum.
Strong classroom management skills.
Excellent English fluency both verbal and written.
Energetic, with a strong work ethic and of good moral character: honest, trustworthy, and dependable must be willing to teach in Sheikh.
Experience working in an internationally based organisation or international school setting will be considered an added advantage.
Proficient in Word, Excel, Email usage, Google Suite, internet searching and willing to learn new computer skills.
Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills in Somali and fluency in English.
